Great job on the front case everyone. The work looks amazing and I must say the filmstrips down the sides added a nice touch (go Lauren!). I'll miss class tomorrow because of an NHS field trip but I look forward to seeing all of the photos hanging in the library. See you guys Monday.

Sunny Days

Summer is finally coming and with that graduation for all the seniors! It's too bad that this class couldn't have started sooner but even after taking only a semester of this class I feel like I've already learned so much. Photography has been a real eye-opener and has changed the way I see a lot of things now. I hope West expands the program. I'm really going to be sad when this class is over.

Kristina

Friendly Reminder

Hey Everyone, I love this class and i like you all but you DO NOT know how to put away your cameras!!
I found my camera today connected to someone's bag by the strap and unhooked!
I wasted 4 minutes of my time taking all of the cameras out and putting them back in a neat and tidy order. Some of the cameras were falling out and unstrapped so i would appreciate it if you all could put your cameras back the way Miss.Morell taught us to when we first came here.
Thank you,

-Bethany

Food Photography

The pressure was definitely on last week with the food photography assignment. I now understand what professional photographers have to go through when a million people are trying to get a shot of the same thing.

I'm pretty pissed that we're aren't able to finish the senior show, especially after working so hard yesterday. And also just confused as to how we made Stewart mad...
Whatever, I guess we need to just move on and focus on the other display. I think for this new display we should write labels for our names under the pictures so that people know where the immense manifest of talent originated. It would probably look better typed.

Lunchtime

Miss Morell if you are reading this blog, I would really like to be able to come in tomorrow at lunch if i can to finish the other two food shots before we have class that afternoon.
I was going to do it friday or today but you weren't here :(

-Bethany

Ack...

So, I didn't get around to blogging in class last week, so I was just going to do it at home Friday or Saturday... But when I tried, it refused to log me in as our photo class. It kept logging me in under my email address instead. Can you say, weird? Anyway, it was obnoxious. So that's my explanation for not having a blog for last week, and my reason for thinking I deserve to not be graded down (HINT HINT, Ms. Morell)...

I am so proud!

Hey everyone,
Hope you all had a great weekend? First of all, I am so proud of you for the work you did last week: food photography is not easy, and studio lighting is not either. And yet, you all produced some amazing work! I am excited to finish the critique, and I apologize that we always seem to run out of time.

Secondly I am overjoyed to annouce that the results of the ASAA art competition are in! I am so proud of Kalie and Joe! In the photography category Joe took 1st place and Kalie took 3rd place! Wow! I'm smiling from ear to ear. You all have really grown this year as photographers and artists in general.

Sorry, I am not there to tell you all of this in person, but I will see you Tuesday. Please hang your show seniors, and remember to put something in the case that says "Photography I, Senior Show," or something to that effect. Write in the chalk, cut out letters? It's up to you. Everyone else, please continue to mount and print work for the other two shows we will be hanging this week.

See you soon,
Miss Morell

Food photography

This past week's assignment of food photography has definitely been my favorite for the whole semester.  There is so much beauty in the different textures and color of all the different food.  And I find that food photography has the most impact on me...(I can't help but get SUPER hungry after looking at really good photos!).  There is also an opportunity to get REALLY creative when working with food.  I have just had so much fun with this project and I am super bummed that it is coming to an end.  However, here are some photos that I took yesterday that I had a lot of fun setting up.  These are not the ones I submitted for crit but let me know what you think of 'em.

-Meredith

Yum, Food!

I had a lot of fun shooting this week. I liked being able to set things up the way I wanted instead of working around a setting that I had no control over. It was much harder to do at home because I don't have very good lighting in my house. I did manage to get some okay shots though. Plus, I had an excuse to buy candy, just so I could take pictures of it! I'm looking forward to the crit. I know there'll be some awesome pictures!

~Kalie

Here's a photo that I like but that won't be in the crit:

Flippin Food

I was only around for the first day of shooting, because I went out of town for a few days, so I didn't get much. The shots I did get are mediocre, I really wasn't into the whole food shooting thing, I thought it was pretty boring... by the way were getting out of here soon, so if you have any cool pictures of me I would love to see em, or just throw all your cool pictures up on facebook so we can all check em out. If you do, you should ad me.

Joe

Light

The most challenging part for this shoot was the light. It was especially difficult to combine the studio light with the natural light in one of the setups and I opted for using only natural light. The studio lights added a completely new dimension to taking photographs. While at first it was frustrating once I started working with the light and manipulating it to my advantage I felt much more favorably towards it. Its too bad I can't carry lights around with me whenever I'm taking pictures.

Kristina

Food/Macro

Well, this project wasn't one of my favorites. I did not like that the class room was so crowded and you kind of had to compete with the lights. Though once I got out of the classroom and took pictures in a less active environment I enjoyed it a lot more. But I did have a real big problem with the lights. Either they were too bright or too dark, but sometimes it worked as long as it wasn't too crazy dark or bright. Anyway, I did get a couple good shots though! =]

Yeah I'm with Hanif, I enjoy the macro aspect a little more than the food part but all in all I really liked the assignment. It let us get creative with food and give us some good experiences with props and sets. The critique is tomorrow and I'm looking forward to seeing everyones photos and im sure theyre all gonna be great.

basically, i dont like food photography very much, I rather do more in macro, but i love this project although I got stuck for several times.

any comment, tips, suggestion?

thanks.

Food

I was only here for one of the days that we took pictures for the food project and it was really hard. It was hard making a sculpter of food and taking a good picture of it.\

Eduardo M.

Food/Macro

I think this assignment is by far one of my favorites, maybe it's because I'm always hungry?
It is so much fun to experience shooting with fruits and other foods. I wish that I could have a little more time since I didn't get to use my time wisely on Monday. I was looking over some of my classmate's photos from the shoot on Monday and I think i'm really going to enjoy this critique on friday!

-Bethany

just let the lovin' take ahold

My disinterest in taking macro shots was pretty evident from the get go. Mostly I didn't think it was going to be challenging after we had spent so much time on our portrait and landscape assignments. Well yesterday was certainly a learning experience for me. Before this assignment I hadn't ever given much thought to light other than the exposure. Working with the studio lights really brought it home though. The pictures I chose were better than the others primarily because of the colors, which the light had a huge impact on.
denile

Food !!!!

This week shooting food was harder than I thought. I enjoyed a lot setting and preparing the food so it could be shot but it was harder than I thought shooting the food and making the color and light be right and also looking out for merger. Overall I really enjoyed setting up the lights and tables to shoot food. I think i wood like to do it again.

-Liliana

Lauren....food.....and annoying lighting.

So.....food. Yum! I was actually pretty excited to start food and through both days of shooting it was fun. I really enjoyed it. I found the studio lighting kind of challenging though. The point of the assignment was to practice with studio lighting but I found that the lights made everything lose its color and kind of look blown out. It was like the natural light completely enhanced the food and its beauty but I felt like the studio lights took away from that. So, I don't know if there's anyway to make the studio lights look not so harsh. But- that was kind of frustrating.

On Food and Photos

Gotta love a tripod that doesn't stop wiggling...Working with food was very entertaining for me, as I very much enjoy reading about and eating the stuff. Working with the lights proved to be somewhat bothersome at times, however. Trying to eliminate shadows often resulted in them mirroring each other, and while the extra light did help exceptionally with regards to camera settings, I thought it blew out some of the subtler colors of the food involved.

- Chris
I just finished taking shots for our food project. I only had one good shot in class but I finished the rest of the pictures at home. I thought shooting food was fun, but would rather shoot a live subject.

Hope I Didn't Miss Anything!

No one has probably really noticed but I hope I didn't miss much in the couple days that I've been gone. I've been trying to brainstorm on our next project but I can't really come up with much. So hopefully I can catch up really quick on Monday or Tuesday if you guys already had the lecture this week. Hope you guys have a great weekend and a nice time shooting! I know I'll be shooting as much as I can this weekend. =]

This is the picture I posted for the contest.

I really liked this weeks critic, I loved a lot of the photos landscape some took they were really good . I am so excited about doing food/macro photography and the different things we are going to try to do with foods, cant wait.
Liliana
I'm hoping to shoot some good food shots next week. I didn't enjoy landscaping as much as I thought I would, but hopefully food will be more appealing. I'm especially interested in shooting macro and look forward to shooting our next project.

Eric

Lauren....food....and short blogs?

I'm actually pretty psyched about shooting food. It's completely different than what I normally like- people, but I'm excited for the challenge. Plus, I LOVe food so it should be fun. And there is no doubt on the day of crit....I'm bringing food so as to not be tortured by the AMAZINGLY appetizing shots I know everyone will have :)

Portraits and Dutch babies

Yeah, I don't really want to create an account on that website, or post pictures of my cousin to it... So... I already posted the pic I would've uploaded, the one of my cousin and the little dog, with the view out the window in the background.
Um, on the subject of Dutch babies, they aren't really called Dutch babies. They're called, like, suucrebrut, or something like that, which we've Americanized. Plus, they're a freaking delicious Dutch delicacy! Egg-based flat bread, add a little powdered sugar, and you're golden. Sorry, I would've had that outburst in class, but I'm bound to silence today. However, my Holland-based heart wouldn't let that comment go unchallenged. :p Happy weekend, everyone!
~Lillian

Excited!!!

I am SUPER excited to work on Food/Macro! I have always been interested in close up pictures of flowers and food and capturing the microscopic beauty of them. I will be taking my camera home this weekend and hopefully be able to attempt taking food/macro pictures myself.

-Meredith

Joe

I use flash a lot of the time, so I didn't have any photos to submit for the natural portrait site. I was bummed with the decision to shoot food, because I like telling stories with my shots. Oh well, it'll still be fun, and delicious.
Okay, even though I really wanted to do photojournalism, macro is one of my all time favorites so I'm excited to shoot food. Plus, I'm really curious about how to make a set with lighting, umbrellas, etc. so I'm looking forward to experimenting with that also.

~Kalie

Eliot

I really enjoyed the crit this week. Everyone had amazing shots of different types of landscapes and I noticed that a good amount of people decided to incorporate the city into a lot of there shots. I had a little trouble focusing and all, but I got a few good shots. I am excited for our new topic whatever it may be.

Ok, I know some of you are bummed, but it is what it is: last senior project is Food/Macro photography. I just found a killer site to check out, and I making our lecture for Friday right now. Monday I will bring in some food and maybe some flowers (haven't decided if we should just keep it to edibles yet - weigh in if you have an opinion on this!) let me know if you have any requests, and feel free to bring in anything you like! See you Friday! http://stilllifewith.com/

I didn't much like landscape I'm not a ice and winter person, I love the grass and sun much better.
So it was hard for me to shoot what I didn't like and make it look good.
So this week and last week was a little tough for me, but I'm sooo excited for the food shots!
I have so many new ideas involving sweets and candy.
(Miss Morell) I've turned in my portrait photos as well.

I didn't really like the landscape project, it was hard for me to get good pictures that I liked in Alaska, I just found it boring.
I like portraits a lot better.

somewhere in the amazon

I fell asleep last night after looking at some nature photography. Lions, hippos, giraffes, cheetahs, elephants! Needless to say I had the craziest dream. (Think White Man Can't Jump with a little of The Lion King mixed in.) And it made me realize that art, like photography, has a huge effect even on a person's subconscious. This is a weird way of saying that I'm glad to be in this class because I can't draw.

I thought the landscaping project was a good experience because it gave me a chance to shoot photos while out in nature. The hardest part of this project was trying to shoot all my photos in the limited amount of time I had. This is because I only took my camera home once and didn't manage my time accordingly. I'm looking forward to our next project,

Landscape

During the week i was absent, so I didn't have much time to get landscape photos. But on Thursday I got a chance to walk around with Bethany, we went all around the school campus and there wasn't many options to choose for the landscape picture. Either way, I got a couple of shots, it's not much but it's something. Hopefully they turn out good....!

I have really enjoyed the landscape assignment, it's gotten me out and about and kind of a new look on nature. Ive taken several decent photos, but with all the landscapes i've shot only a few have been in complete focus. Ive been wanting to go out about sunrise and sunset and get some nice colorful photos but I havent had the chance to go out at those hours hopefully this weekend will free up some time for trying that.

Landscape

I was really hoping to get outside, and get some awesome photos for this assignment but couldn't due to limitations with my camera.

For this shot I just wanted to keep it simple, and to accent the trees with the sun.

-Eugene

Wisps of Thought: Landscapes

Note to self: Don't EVER use a telephoto lens to shoot landscapes in low light, if at all.

Now that that's out of the way, I'm finding landscape shots a challenge to shoot for a myriad of reasons: The light needs to be just right; tripods are a near necessity; if you want trees in the foreground, include the WHOLE thing, else it's a distraction; shoot when there's a lot of the right light, so as to keep the image sharp and crispy; have locations predetermined, but don't hesitate to peel off the beaten path and try to find something off-the-wall; and did I mention the light quality?
It's made for a fun assignment, even if all my preliminary shots were shot down like so many aircraft. Ahh well, if at first you don't succeed...

- Chris

Frustrations...

Well, I really DO love this project... I just have to keep telling myself that lately.
I walked around my house and up to Glenn Alps the other day and got some really great photos, some of which I was really quite excited about, but then I loaded them up onto the big screen, and... low and behold... OUT OF FOCUS!! Every single one. Well, every single otherwise good one.
There are a couple that I'll probably keep regardless of blurriness... But, on the whole, I'm very glad Ms. Morell extended the deadline!! I plan to experiment with manual focus a bit over the weekend, so hopefully I'll have better luck with that.
Happy Easter, everyone, and I can't wait to see all the photos!

LANDSCAPE.. i find it one of the hardest things to photograph. its simply pictures of whats there, and its hard to find a way to make it interesting in a photo, but i find landscape photography fun because it MAKES you get out and look at things in a way you would'nt have before!
CANT WAIT TO SEE EVERYONES PHOTOS!!!!!!!!!!!
HERES one of my pics just outside the school
I was stoked going into the landscape project because I had a lot of places in mind to shoot. Once I tried to find time to shoot, I ran into some trouble. I had a lot of things going on, so it was tough to get out and shoot, especially when the lighting was good. I have a few places in mind this weekend though. Also, some of my shots were turning out blurry even while using a tripod, just from pushing the shutter. I found that tightening everything possible on the tripod helps a lot. In the beginning, I had some that were simply out of focus. To solve that, when I shoot, I use continuous drive, and shoot as I go all the way through the focus.

Landscape

This week for the landscape photo I was excited because I think that my favorite thing to shoot are landscapes. This week has been a bit busy but I was able to take some really nice shots of the moon that I really liked. I am hoping to get really good shots over the weekend and have them ready for Mondays critic. Hope You Feel Better Ms. Morell.

Yesterday Daniella and I walked around the school property and took landscape pictures although some didn't turn out that well. I started to be confused yesterday wondering if the landscape pictures had to have LAND in them or if they just have to be anything outside. Even though I looked in my notes i'm not 100% sure of what im shooting.

Bad week

I didnt get my landscape photos done this week the whole HSQE testing didnt give me any time to go out in the hallway and take pictures. So i will work on that starting next week.

Lauren....love...and landscapes

I'm surprised to say I enjoyed shotting landscapes more than I thought. As many of you know I'm a people person. I love shooting people- but landscapes proved to be interesting even though I didn't expect them to to be. It was cool to walk around my neighborhood and notice beauty in the oddest places- like the two trees in my neighbor's yard. I looked at them and I saw partership and some weird kind of feeling of like...tree love. Kind of bizarre, actually alot bizarre but it was strangely amazing. I noticed while taking my landscape shots that I took almost all of the portrait instead of landscape. I this may have been because I took all my within a few blocks of my house. I live downtown so traditional "landscape" shots are kind of non-existent. So by taking the shots portrait I was able to capture just what I wanted and not the car off to the side of the stop sign jus to the left. It allowed me to capture the pocket of beauty I found within the streets of downtown. I also noticed myself only taking shots like that one other guy at dawn and at dusk. I totally agree that everything comes alive when the sun goes down. So the majority of my shots are either at night or at sunset. Anyway, I really enjoyed this assignment, and here's some of my favorite shots other than the ones I'm turning in.

Focus Trouble

Throughout this entire landscape project I have noticed along with Ms, Morell, that I have trouble keeping everything or one thing in focus when I am taking these landscape photos. With the majority of my shots I could point out what I was trying to focus on but it was not necessarily in focus. The mountains in most of my shots are out of focus and I have taken many mountain shots with the mountains as the focal point of my shot. Maybe I am doing something wrong but I would like some possible solutions to my problem if you guys have any and it would be greatly appreciated.
-Eliot

The Crud

Hello!
Sorry I missed class today. The crud kept me home! Nonetheless, I am reading the blog and looking forward to your posts today. I am enjoying the posts that have already gone up and the photos you have taken so far! Please use your time today to upload and/or finish shooting your landscape shots.

Notice I changed the deadline for the shots being due: they are now due on Monday. We will begin our crit on Monday as well.

Blog if you have not yet this week, and please do some planning for the front case. Start deciding which photo you would like to put in, and seniors think of which photo you want in the Senior Showcase, near the art rooms. Also please cut out some letters or words reflecting that this will be senior work!

Lastly, I will offer extra credit to anyone who enters the Poster Contest. Get it all ready and we can print it on Monday. See you then!

Landscape photos

For this week's assignment, I went on a walk around my neighborhood and found a pathway that lead to a frozen swamp near the Coastal Trail. These are some pictures that I took while I was walking. I also shot a lot of these photos in monochrome because there wasn't a lot of color and I thought shooting in black and white would make the pictures look better. Let me know what you all think.

-Meredith

Landscape Project.

So I've felt a little rushed on this project since I never really have time to go out to take pictures. And plus I've had a lot of problems with this project also. Like, I didn't have a tripod when I was shooting a lot so most of my pictures are a bit blurry. Or the sun just threw off my pictures also. Just the simple things just threw off my pictures, so I took about two hundred pictures in total. Though, after the time I spent on taking pictures I think I actually got about five good photos so I'm happy about that. I'm excited for tomorrow because I know we will see a lot of good photos and hopefully I can learn how to improve my photos even more. =]
~Tia'Rashell

Landscapes

I definately had a lot of fun taking landscape photos. It presented a whole new set of challenges separate from what I'd experienced before. I tried taking photos at all different times of the day. I really struggled with nighttime photos, especially with graininess. I think I just wasn't using the right combination of iso, aperture, etc. I was able to borrow my sister's tripod so I could really play with longer exposure times. I ended up liking landscape shooting more than I thought I would and I think I'll keep taking them after this assignment. I'm determined to get a good photo of a sunset and at night.

Sunset and Downtown Landscape

I took these pictures with slow shutter speed and manual focus [excpt the dog], I realized that its kinda hard to focus with object far away from the lens, although sometimes you can get it right. The sunset i took in Point Woronzof Sunset and the Downtown was near west high.

Tips!

Hey everyone, good blogs this week! Again, I was impressed by the quality of work that came in for the portrait assignment, and am looking forward to your landscape shots. I was in Girdwood yesterday on one of those killer bluebird days we live for here in Alaska and was thinking of all of you hoping you were experiencing the same joy outside!

I wanted to post a link today because I received an email from DPS and one of the articles was about shooting portraits outside:

http://digital-photography-school.com/13-tips-for-improving-outdoor-portraits

Also, I thought this article about being behind the scenes of an album cover shoot was quite cool, and thought of all the work Morgan put into setting up her portrait shots:

Last week on the critique for our portraits I was glad to receive positive feedback and also on what I could improve on . And now I am looking forward and excited about the landscaping photo and ready to try taking different landscapes of different time of days.

Critique

I think the critique was the most helpful tip this week. I enjoyed looking through the different photos and picking out my favorites. I love photos that tell me a story or make me think and i saw quite a few that did exactly this.

-Bethany

Nice critique

WOW you guys did a really good job on your portraits last week they were all so good. The critique really helped me see how to do portrait.

Long Overdue Trip Pictures

Just some shots I took with my dinky little point and shoot in and around Maui three weeks ago. I meant to post these up a while ago, but never got around to it. Down a blog post for the week, I figured this'd be the perfect opportunity. Without further ado...

These two were from a train ride...thing about halfway through the week. It was pretty underwhelming, but I got some decent pics from it.

This...is just fail. It's a paradox in a box.

This is the Failboat outside Lahaina on the second to last day. No idea how it got there, though...

On the way back from Seattle, with darkness setting in. Took a few tries to get, and I'm still not sure it turned out right...

My attempt at an evening cloudscape. Still might be too dark, though...

Well, what do you think?

Landscapes, yayy!

Landscapes... I'm so excited!!! Shooting outside and getting shots of nature is my favorite thing to do in photography, so this assignment is right in my comfort zone! Which is good, I guess...? Anyway, I plan to fully enjoy it.
Up where I live on Hillside, there are two or three magnificent views right out my bedroom window, and many more if I go tromp around outside a bit. My only problem so far is managing to stay afloat on the three or four feet of snow in my yard... I think snow shoes may be called for. Fun stuff, guys! Can't wait to see everyone's photos!!
~Lillian
P.S. Whoever changed the colors (Lauren?) I LOVE the orange and black!!!

When taking landscape photos there are 11 things to watch for.
1Maximize depth of field 2Use a tripod 3look for a focal point 4Think about foreground 5Consider the Sky 6AWatch Lines 7Capture movement 8Work with the weather 9Take shots in GOLDEN HOURS 10Think about horizons 11Change point of view!!
if you look for all of these things , you will have beautiful photos!
While I don't normally take an interest in landscapes, I'm really excited about this assignment. I'm already brainstorming some good places to go for this. I'd really like to get a shot with a sunset because it's one of those things that I see and then kick myself for not having a camera ready. So here's my chance!

~Kalie
I really enjoyed the portrait assignment. To just go out and take a bunch of photos of whatever we wanted was really nice. The critique was also really good this week, there was alot of good suggestions and improvements I thought it was probably the best one we've had so far. Im excited for the new landscape assignment. I have several places in mind and just hope the photos I take will look as good as they do in my head.

I Got Some Nice Shots.

I've been shooting for a couple days around town and I believe I have got quite a bit good photos. Though I have taken quite a bit of photos I'm not happy with all my shots. This weekend I'm going to get more shots though over the weekend when I'm not working. I heard because of the new snowfall outside of town looks very pretty right now so hopefully I'll get pictures, that's my goal at least! It's just really hard to get all my photos straight though and when they are straight they're not always in focus. So hopefully I'll get the tripod to actually work with me this weekend and I'll get a lot of shots. Happy shooting everyone!

When I first signed up for this class, the one thing that I had in mind was landscape photos. I really, really love pictures of nature and scenic views and I have always wanted to travel the world and visit some really beautiful places that I have only seen from photographs. Even though it's impossible for me to travel the world for this project, I am excited to be able to travel around Anchorage and try to find really beautiful places. I have never been to Hatcher's Pass and I was thinking maybe over the weekend I could go there with my camera. We will have to see if I will be able to. But, overall, I am very excited to just spend time finding beautiful places that I hope to share at critique.

Hey guys, I'm looking forward to starting our landscaping project. I haven't done anything with this project yet but I am already predicting that finding a shoot able landscape will be the hardest part. Hopefully I can find landscapes that work in our school environment.

Starting Landscape...

I am really excited about our landscape project! This is going to be a lot different from portraits, hopefully in a good way. There won't be any people to deal with which was what I thought made portraits so difficult. However, my main concern is to make my landscape shots interesting and to avoid anything too cliche. Alaska is a very beautiful state and I already have lots of ideas for places to start taking pictures.

Landscape ---Birds and Cloud--

+
I took this one while ago, same time with the picture of the bird that I posted in my first blog. I like this one very much, my intension to take picture was to capture the bird, but I think it would be better if i used slower shutter speed, and get brighter background with cloud shows up, because the most of the birds are stay still on the tree.

There were some pretty cool shots for the portrait assignment, I was pretty happy with mine as well. I just wish that I had submitted a different shot to mix it up a little bit from the right third, I definitely had plenty of shots to choose from. I'm stoked to get some landscape shots, I have a few places in mind.

I am super stoked about our landscape project. I hope ill be able to rent out the camera, because I have been waiting for this all semester. It always seems like I'm searching for landscapes everywhere i go. Just when I'm daydreaming or staring off into space. So I am really excited.

I believe from what I saw from the shots in the lecture today I would like to take more landscape shots during the "golden hours." This type of shot seemed very interesting to me and I am eager to get out there and take some shots during dusk or dawn.
