Well like many others have said this has been a week of learning. I'm still having trouble trying to find the perfect aperture shots and hopefully will get it down by the end of next week. I've got a fairly decent understanding of shutter speed now that I know panning doesn't have to be a super long shutter speed.

Rule of Thirds
I used this photo for my fast shutter speed assignment. I thought it was a decent shot for fast shutter speed but was wondering what your opinions were regarding the rule of thirds. I know we haven't talked about it much in class and will learn more on Monday, but I was under the impression that the focus of the picture is supposed to be on the left or right side of the photo. The reason I wanted to get a second opinion about this photo regarding the rule of thirds is because I can not see how the picture would improve by moving the focus (electric light) to any one side of the picture. Any thoughts would help,-Eric

i had a little experience using some kind of nikon film camera this last weekend, my pictures turned out pretty good, i shot a very good aperture photo of my friends sitting on a rocking chair with four other rocking chairs beside her.
im excited to be in this class so i can learn more about photography.

Difficult Panning
Eliot-
I got some shots for panning and I put them in the turn-in folder but I was not totally sure if those photos actually displayed panning in a good form. I got some shots of cars going by but I was to zoomed in to much to get the full effect of my panning shot. The next day me and Joe tried to get some more panning shots, and that was a little bit better, I was zoomed out more and you could see more of the background but all of the photos were coming out on the far left side of the picture. The shots are in focus on the target and it looks like a good panning shot but the target is on the left side of the photo. Could you please tell me what I am doing wrong.

I am loving photography i feel like i can look at pictures and be able to describe it like; aperture or fast shutter speed...... and the more I take pictures I start to get all the different styles. Now that I am taking photography I look at my pictures I have taken and the ones I've taken recently with a different view. I know that all the things I learn in photography I will start taking great pictures.

Good camera can make a better photograph. thats right, but u can make it more. Practice make it perfect. as ms morell says, the more you shoot the better u get. honestly, to take the "bug" picture, i took 50 other junk pictures to get that one.
Now we dont use film, so dont be afraid to take a lot of picture, u can delete whichever you dont like.

Lauren...panning...and learning
Ah. This week has been one of frustration but also one of massive amounts of learning. Ever since Monday I had been working on trying to get a good panning shot but it wasn't working. I continually kept trying and it just wasn't working for whatever reason....shutter speed or lighting. But finally at the last possible second it finally clicked. I went outside where the lighting was totally killer and just started snapping shots of every passing car and they were working! Ah! It was so exciting. I would like to say I have total control on panning but I don't but Im willing to keep working to get there because I think it is such a cool technique. And one other thing. Seeing everyone's photos on Wednesday was such a great experience. Seeing the creativity and the interpretation of the assignment other people had was really awesome for me and really made me want to just get out and shoot more.
Joseph-
I got my shots for aperture and shutter speed fairly easily, and had the most trouble getting a good panning shot. Most of my issues came from the shutter speed I was using, and photos coming out over exposed as a result of long exposure times and a low aperture. Originally I used the M and Bulb trying while I followed my subject, and later figured out to just use 1/20th for shutter speed, and gave up on manually setting aperture. I'm going to try to get something more interesting for a panning shot.

While waiting...
Yesterday I took my brother to his orthodontist appointment. While I was waiting in the lobby I found, mixed in with People magazines, a biography of Henri Cartier-Bresson. He was a French photographer and "considered to be the father of modern photojournalism." In the book I found a quote that I really liked and wrote it down on a receipt in my wallet. "Think about the photo before and after, never during. The secret is to take your time. You mustn't go too fast. The subject must forget about you. Then, however, you must be very quick." I thought it showed how when taking a photo you have to balance several different things like aperture and shutter speed. Not only that but you have to be very aware of your surroundings and perfect your timing to be able to get the photo you want. Any thoughts?

I always thought photography was a representation, summarization, a glimpse of reality. All the manipulations that can be done with a picture tell me that it clearly isn't. The reality of a picture is the photographers reality. It's kind of empowering

I have noticed what an affect photography has had on me recently. No matter where I am whether it would be at school, my home, the coastal trail or even my untidy garage, I see something small that stands out to me that could be a good aperture or shutter speed shot. I would never noticed any of these simple things if I had not taken photography. It has only been a few weeks of taking this class and I have already grown so much as a photographer. I am very excited to learn more about photography and take more pictures!!

Everyones shots were awesome. They look like they could've been done by professionals. I wish I had gotten my pictures in on time so that you guys could see mine. But I was having minor technical difficulties. But I'm sure that I'm getting the hang of it, so you should see them soon!

Many many men can't see the open road

This picture is pretty gross. There's no color, no light even and the background of trees seem almost eerie. However I really think that this speaks to how a lot of people live. The title of this post is from a Led Zeppelin song, "Over the Hills and Far Away," and its about living a life with no meaning; not taking the time to see where you're going or why.

Woo, Thanks Guys!

So, I got aperture down, thanks so much for the tips! With all of your tips I finally figured out and understood what everyone meant by placing the camera down and mounting it on a table or even the floor would made it almost a for sure chance of having a clear picture. Even though it is still pretty hard for me to keep the camera stable and make the pictures clear after about f/16, I now totally get this. Also, I was wondering, could you guys help me out by telling me what you think about one of my aperture shots? This one is on f/4, thanks so much everyone for the help!

I think that my shots were really good. But when I looked at the examples on the board, I realized my mistakes and that I was doing aperture TOTALLY WRONG!!! Now, I realize my mistakes. I need A LOT OF PRACTICE!!!!

Awesome Aperture
This is the first in a series of three by Meridith, and it is well done. This is f/9 and I like how the fence in the foreground is crisp - you can see the ice on the links. You can also see that there are a ton of other items in the backgroud which are out of focus. You can use this technique later for effect. Nice use of depth of field! (Miss Morell)Panning shot!

I am so confused about aperture and shutter speed...but I think I sort of got it..

Stumped
Okay so, I was wayyy confused about this whole blogging thing. But I think I might know what to do now. I took a few pictures with Lauren in the foyer of the trophies in the glass cases. Not all of them turned out that well but I really like the gold colored detail :)
Tell me what you guys think. I think I need some help!

Heyy Guys! Can I Get Some Tips??
Okay, I know, I know, this may sound strange, but this is driving me crazy. For the people in my class that don’t really know me yet, when I can’t figure things out it just annoys me really bad! But I’ve been wondering, who is having probably getting some decent aperture shots? I have been having such a hard time! I have panning down quit a bit and I thought that would be the hard thing, but for some reason aperture is the thing giving me a hard time. I would really appreciate some tips! To me it seems like I cannot get the photo to not be blurry after f/16, is anyone having that same problem? Honestly, aperture is giving me a hard time and I would love some input, even if it’s some harsh input like someone telling me I’m doing something completely wrong! I do for sure understand what aperture is and how to set it up, maybe I’m just holding the camera wrong, but I honestly don’t know. I just need to put my mind to ease by getting some tips, even if you just verbalize it to me! Thank you guys!
~Tia'Rashell
PS: Just thought I would add a photo to brighten up the page. =]

This is a one of the few quality aperture shots I took. It was taken close to the shoes on an f-number of 5.7. I found through several of these shots that unless your camera is stable for the shot (on the ground for this picture) and especially with higher f-numbers, that your shots will come out blurry otherwise. -Eric

Uploading Pictures (Incorrect Parameter)
Hey guys,
I just thought you should know that if you're having trouble making you're pictures larger by double-clicking on them (after they have been downloaded onto your computer) and then you need to to right click on that picture and select the open with tab. After you select that tab, click on Microsoft Office Picture Manager and the pictures should get larger no problem. Before I learned this I kept double-clicking on the picture I was trying to make bigger and a window that said The parameter is incorrect would always pop up.
Hope this helps,
-Eric

Epic timing + a quick shutter speed + a table tennis pro being pro = win picture. And as for an aperture shot...
Just a tip: It really helps for the narrower apertures to mount/balance the camera against something solid, like a railing or a table, so as to nullify camera shake while the sensor takes in the light. If the camera is shaken even a little bit (i.e. a minor twitch at most) during those few seconds, the photo will be irreparably blurred.By Chris
Any tips for Panning...???

After taking a good 200 pictures, I only got four adequate aperture photos. I do not believe this is the BEST I can do but I believe with more practice, I will be able to get wicked aperture photos! I still have problems with taking pictures with a higher aperture and having it be blurry. Is there a way, besides trying to move as little as possible, that can help me solve this?
Heyy, It's Me, Tia'Rashell Again =]

The one thing I've learned that I love the most to do in this class so far is panning. I believe it makes some beautiful shots. All you have to do is follow the person you are trying to capture with your camera and push the shutter button when you're ready for your shot. And if you get a great shot it will have the person you want in focus either perfect or close to perfect and have all the people or other things around whatever that's in focus will be blurry. It kind of reminds me of someone trying to show that the one person in focus is the most important thing while everyone else is not, but that's at least what it makes it seem like to me. Panning was first a little hard for me, but once I got it down a little, it just seems to get easier. My most favorite picture so far that I have taken is the in this blog, I hope you guys find it hilarious like I do! =]
Jose
While taking my aperture shots, after some messing around, I realized that I had to stabilize the camera with some sort of object to demonstrate a higher F stop. I found that anything above about 18 or 20 would come out blurry because I would have to slow down the shutter speed to get the necessary exposure. I put my camera on a table in a bright spot (so I wouldn’t need a flash), with a darker background. I think I got em.

Lauren..photos..and long blogs.

Hey phlobbers. Like photo-bloggers. Nevermind, thats lame, fun to say though...ANYWAY..These are just a few of my favorite photos from my collection. I didn't take the one of me jumping. My friend did. I love capturing people and objects mid-motion. How you can freeze time and capture it in a picture. That is so righteously cool. I actually just realized the one of me in my bead is an example of aperture. I love that one. It just so captures everything I feel when I'm in my room laying in my bed. The one of my eye is another favorite. I'm fascinated with eyes. I think they are so beautiful- weird maybe but whatever. The last picture shows aperture too I guess. This was before it good doctored up but I love how it just captures the moment and everything they both felt in that moment. Sadly I can't really take credit for this one. It was my sisters camera and she set everything- I just pushed the button. Well. I guess just one more thing. I love taking pictures of people. THey are my favorite subjects. I love capturing candid moments- just freezing them forever in time. That rocks my photography world.
This Is Eliot
I have been having difficulty with trying to keep some of my aperture photos from being blurry. When ever my F stop is around 18 to 25 it seems like the shutter speed is being slowed and thats the reason I think for why some of my shots are blurry. Every time I switch to TV and change the shutter speed and then go back to AV at a high F stop the shutter speed still seems like it is still slowed. could you please tell me if I am just being dumb and I am missing or, is it something else. Thanks
