Difficult Panning

I got some shots for panning and I put them in the turn-in folder but I was not totally sure if those photos actually displayed panning in a good form. I got some shots of cars going by but I was to zoomed in to much to get the full effect of my panning shot. The next day me and Joe tried to get some more panning shots, and that was a little bit better, I was zoomed out more and you could see more of the background but all of the photos were coming out on the far left side of the picture. The shots are in focus on the target and it looks like a good panning shot but the target is on the left side of the photo. Could you please tell me what I am doing wrong.
