The numbers for aperture are the same as fractions. The smaller the number in the denominator the greater the value of the whole fraction. Thus f/1.4 is a larger opening or aperture diameter than f/22.

  1. Correct! And how does this affect depth of field?

A larger aperture (ex. f/1.4) has a shallow depth of field which means anything besides the main focus point will not be in focus. But with a smaller aperture (ex. f/22) there is a greater depth of field so even objects beyond the main focus point will be in focus.
