CRIT-
This Wednesday I really enjoyed the crit although almost no one completed the assignment it was still really fun listing to what people had to say. I also believe that the crit helped out many people with there frustrations and difficulties, it totally helped me. By doing the crit I think that everyone understood the assignment more and having a crit each week definitely helps out every one in the class including me.

This week's blog post
Hey everyone,
The crit yesterday went great! You are all producing fantastic images and making strides in your skills. For this week's blog (I know a couple of you have already posted) please read these two articles and make a comment to this blog about them. I hope you find them helpful!

I Finally Got It!

When we first started POV I thought I understood it but I soon found out I didn't understand it at all. I thought it was when you shot your subject from different angles, but that wasn't it. POV is when you try and show different sides of your subject, like you're trying to point out the good qualities in them or you try and point out the qualities in them that you want to be known. Also say if you're an object you can show how it "feels", like if you want it to appear lonely you can have it from a distance or you can show what the object "sees" every day of its life. I can't wait to see everyone's photos today during the critique today; I bet they'll be wonderful! This is one of my photos that I kind of like, it's not the best, plus I'm putting it up because I didn't want to put any of my project photos on. Can you guys tell me what you think? And tell me what you think I was trying to point out? Thanks guys! =]

Red Eye Glare
I was looking at some family pictures over the weekend and noticed that in a lot of the photos the eyes of the people turned red. I see this a lot in photos and was wondering what causes it and how it could be fixed. Any feedback would be appreciated,

POINT OF VIEW!
I liked the projects from this week! The mergers were really fun and interesting, and I though at first wow I dont understan the concept of POV and FOB as much as when she talked about it, But after watching the power point I was like wow I got it now!! It's an interestin concept. And I'm looking foward for the next projects. yup!-DANIELA

I really liked the projects this week! The mergers were fun, and though I didn't really understand the concept of POV as well as I would've thought at first, I eventually really got it! It's a cool concept... So here they are. Third one: I'm a person walking through the forest, noticing this particular tree. Second one: I'm a squirrel climbing down the tree. First one: I'm a bug on the bark of the tree. Yep.
:)
Point of View lesson

This week the most important thing that I learned was how to really take point of view pictures. At first, I took pictures of a glove caught in a branch. I moved to take the pictures and got the glove at different angles. This isn't point of view. Point of view is showing a different side of the subject of your photos. Above are the photos of the glove that do NOT represent point of view and the trashcan ones are the photos that DO represent point of view.

Point of View-
I think point of view is one of the most important aspects of photography, it tells the viewer what to think is going on in a photo or how to feel about it. For example pointing your view at something from below will make that something seem powerful and intimidating it, or shooting a person from above can have the effect of making that person seem lonely and powerless. Choosing the right point of view is what will ensure that your photo needs no explaining, and tells a vivid side of a story.

Point of view-
From what I took from the notes on monday my understanding of point of view is that you are taking a photograph of the perspective of the viewer. Once you have found your focal point you ask your self how can I enhance it. But I still think that I am missing something although I believe I have the basic principal I just am having a difficult time.

I haven't been here for a while because of that sickness going around and therefore I haven't been here to learn much about it, but I plan on catching up quick. I've asked some fellow classmates about everything that I missed and I think I understand it, so hopefully it'll be somewhat easy. Again, sorry for falling behind.
This week in Photography I have no questions. This time i've got it. I know the assignment and what Im supposed to do. I spent a day at the library yesterday and I was skimming over a couple photography sites on the computer. I wish i could take the cameras home. It's sad we can't. Whenever i walk around town or i sit in the mall i could imagine myself taking awesome pictures, while thinking of the rule of thirds, or the lighting, or POV. I love photography =]

still figuring it out...
Even though our latest assignments are really simple, I can't seem to get a good series of pictures. I have some really cool ones but none that I can use. I really like shooting for p.o.v. though. It's fun to figure out new ways to photograph the same thing. Looking through my old pics I realized I was utilizing p.o.v. a lot more than I'd thought.

Point of View
You resent me.
I resent you.
That's what we call
The point of view.
~Ogden Nash
I feel like I'm starting to understand how important point of view is in photography. When I started working on the assignment I was just taking pictures of the same thing from a different angle. After some enlightenment from Ms Morell I started thinking of ways to take a picture but instead of just shooting different angles like we did in our rule of thirds assignment I tried to find a way to tell a different story of the same subject by using different points of view.

Lighting

For some reason I have been having a lot of trouble with lighting in the school. It always seems like I can never get the perfect lighting so everything is just great. Does anyone have any tips? Anyway, I have learned a lot in the last couple days I have been back to school. I didn't know how hard it was to actually get some great POV photos! Hopefully I can get some great ones next week haha. We have a critique tomorrow and I'm excited to see everyones FOV and merger photos. =]
Here's my favorite picture from yesterday, even though I wish I could get more lighting in it. Though, I think it kind of makes him more "bam" ish to me because he stands out more, plus it kind of makes him mysterious even though he totally shouldn't be because if you know him he's just a funny guy to be around and doesn't have a mean side to him at all. Have a great day guys! =]

I can never seem to write a short blog.....Lauren

So, I had so much fun shooting yesterday. I'm still trying to activate my mind. I don't know, I feel kind of like my brain is kind of thinking in the box sometimes but I continue to be so inspired seeing what you guys are doing and it gets me thinking more creatively. Yesterday I took SO MANY pictures of my friend Megan. She is an excellent model and I'm hoping some of the shots worked. I really love shooting people and just trying to capture the essence of them on film....or digital planes I guess! Anyway, I'm really hoping some of the shots worked out. Check out the picture below. I know that its WAY overexposed but we both kind of thought it made it look like an atom bomb was exploding or something. I would like it to be a little less overexposed but I still like the effect. Tell me what you think! I want your opinions!

Annie Liebovitz
Annie Liebovitz is one of the more popular portraitists, if not the most popular, of the past century. She started her career shooting for the magazine Rolling Stone, and recently her work has been shown by The Gap and Vanity Fair. Many of her pictures are icons in mainstream culture, regardless of an individual's ability to connect them as Liebovitz's work. Published in her book Women, is one of my favorite pictures. The subject is Ann Richards, the former governor of Texas.

I really enjoyed this week's assignments and am really starting to see things in that new photography perspective. I look forward to the new assignments and hope to get some good shots. I read those articles and found them interesting. Our gym really does not have enough light for excellent action shots so these tips could really help out. I also liked Simon's photograph, it was really interesting how he could take so many simple portraits and make them into something huge and meaningful like that.

Well, I had a LOT of free time to wander and experiment this week, so here are a few results of that. I especially like the one of Miss Morell having fun with her shadow. :D For more professional reasons, perhaps, I also like the one of the birch tree, because it uses the Rule of Thirds pretty well and I like the detail. Tell me what you think! :)

In-Class Articles
The article by Christina Dickson on indoor photography supported what we've already been learning in class. When trying to shoot movement and get a clear photo its necessary to use a fast shutter speed and also a low aperture to compensate for the lack of light. Lyndzee Ellsworth's photos and article on the impact of shutter speed also reinforced what we've already learned. I also experienced this first hand when trying to shoot outside with lots of sunlight and having too low of a shutter speed and aperture which resulted in an extremely overexposed picture. The article on the rule of thirds had an interesting concept with using a 5x7 frame. Even though I don't plan on using one it is important to visualize the photo before you take it and work the rule of thirds into it. Simon Hoegsberg's photo made me think of how easy it is to alter a photo and thus in a sense alter a perceived reality. We've been conditioned to believe that a photo is the truth and it truly troubled me to see how easy it was for him to take advantage of that.

I definitely notice photography class a lot when I try to watch T.V. I notice when a very low or high aperture is used, and often notice that low apertures are often used in close ups focusing in on something, or to add an element of suspense, with the blurred unknown. I see high apertures (or the effect of) with wide establishing shots aimed to tell a lot at once, or avoid confusion or weariness. every time I see a blurry background and focused vehicle or athlete, I think "panning".
Articles
I learned some about shutter speed from the indoor photography and night shooting articles, but it seemed rather redundant. The knowledge of ISO i gained from the articles was new and useful though. I feel that many of our ROT shots could be just as good as the pictures from the online classes assignment, and could all be much better with a few moments in Photoshop. It seems like many of the shots I saw online had all been modified at least slightly. I was interested by the 100 meter long picture, and thought it was an excellent example of a superb way to put something together with pictures. I thought he should have made sure the repeated cranes were unnoticeable to give it more of a continuous feel.

ROT on the move....
So....I really like making movies. Everything- documentaries to home videos to class projects. I don't know what it is about it...but I love it. NEVERTHELESS...it's kind of strange. I've been noticing myself observing the different angles and shots of people on screen. My mind is constantly looking for, in particular, the rule of thirds. When I'm just sitting down watching a movie or a show my mind is buzzing off on...'oh they're in the right third'...or,'thats an intresting way to use rule of thirds. Photography is invading my brain! =]

Rule of Thirds
This week that I we have learned about the rule of thirds, I can see the difference between taking a photo in the center and taking on using the ROT. Now that I take pictures with my own camera I use the rule of thirds and my pictures come out better.

There are so many ways to find info. on photography, in these articles there is plenty of facts on sports photography, the impact of shutter speed, Rule of thirds, and a very interesting interview with Simon Hoegsberg!
Interesting facts about sports shutter speed would include, watching for action and movement, camera should be set to a high ISO setting, A fast shutter speed, using a lens with the lowest aperture possible, be aware of expression, and shoot in RAW.
When using shutter speed use your best judgments, the quicker the shutter speed the more focused your photo will be.
When achieving the Rule of thirds, look for the most pleasing view, keep objects from the center of the shot , make a good focusing spot!
Simon Hoegsberg- created a photography project entitled Were All Gonna Die- 100 meters of existence. this project consist of 100 full meters of photos of people in an average day. This is an amazing idea and a beautiful creation that must be seen!!
WOW So much to learn in so little time .....(cause were all gonna die!)

Although I had a difficult time with figuring out the rule of thirds concept, which is typical for almost every assignment we get, I finally figured out what I was doing wrong and corrected the mistakes I was having. The days that we had to work on the rule of thirds assignment were a bit difficult for me especially the first few days. All my shots I had taken were on the left side of the frame only.So I asked about the concept of ROT to actually get the right shots and I went out and got some good rule of thirds shots.

I can see clearly now
I couldn't help but remember what Meredith said earlier about how this class had changed her perspective. I now find myself looking at photographs and even tv shows differently. Just last night, watching Grey's Anatomy, I noticed that the cameramen went between switching field of view and point of view to emphasize different people at different times. I even saw the rule of thirds come into play and never realized before how much just the position of a person on a screen can be used to lead your audience to focus on the subject you want.

I Am So Psyched For Our New Projects!

Well, if you guys didn't notice we had a beautiful day yesterday! It was a perfect day to shoot outside because of all the light, plus it was so clear. I noticed yesterday I got the rule of thirds totally down, I don't even have to think about using it now since it just comes to me naturally now. Also, I can't wait to do the projects of FOV, POV, and doing mergers on Friday! I also can't wait to see everyones' photos when we do critique, I already know the photos will be awesome! Can you guys tell me what you think about this photo? I was just having fun taking pictures of Brandi taking pictures of me and everything else, plus I was taking advantage of the beautiful day. Thanks guys! =]

I went to the pottery class yesterday to try and get some interesting photos. It turned out the pottery room was full of small things that made great photos plus there was awesome lighting that not only helped create quality photos but also was a lot of fun to play with. Here's just one of the shots I took. I know it's a little overexposed but I like that in this particular photo, even more so than the ones that weren't.

Awesome.

Hey guys, tell me what you think of these pictures, I need feedback!
The rule of thirds is freaking sweet! I understand it so well its unbelievable. I can get so much great shots because its easy to get the hang of. Everything that I've learned so far is coming together very nicely. I may not have much to say, but what i do say has meaning so thanks for listening.
P.S.: Today is my birthday so I felt motivated to take some awesome pictures!
Peace out!-Brandi W.
I may be something similar to a word that is sort of similar to skunk
...so Zoe Strauss. She's a freaking genius, super smart and with it. Its hard to fit everything together with only words though because she radiates this presence and almost tangible talent that one has to experience. You can sense it in her work but it makes more sense if you see her. SO here's a picture

ROT- Joe
While I was shooting my rule of thirds shots, I got plenty of photos demonstrating different uses for the rule of thirds, but hated them all because they were essentially boring. Instead of setting up a photo that would align to the rule, I started by thinking of something interesting to shoot, and then shooting it with the rule of thirds. Now I'm getting some good stuff.

Like Champs!
To my stellar students:
YOU ROCK! I was so impressed by your attention, your honesty, and your tough skin today! You took the Crit like champs! I know it's hard to have your work up in front of everyone, I have been there. I know it's hard to hear your did not complete the assignment, I have been there too. And I know it's hard to think of re-doing what you tried so hard to do the first time, but believe me, it pays off! You are ALL becoming better photographers, and I can see that all of your artistic eyes are improving with each technicality and technique we learn. This weekend, keep you eyes open and know that I am so proud to be your teacher.
On Monday Denile will give us a little recap of the Zoe Strauss lecture she attended, and I am really looking forward to it. Then, if there is time, you will have the rest of the period to re-shoot ROT photos, and if you were one of the four whose photos counted, you can always practice and get more for the portfolio! (Tuesday will be a shooting/work day as well)

Rule of Thirds
Okay, I didn't really like my photos from the critique (the bike). I kind of like this one though. But I wish she were more in focus and that the background had blurred more.

Crits
As apprehensive as I was when I found out what a critique was I found myself regretting that I won't be there for our second crit today. I was initially very nervous when we were told that our pictures were going to be displayed in front of the class to go over. But I found that it was actually very helpful and gave me a different perspective I hadn't considered.

Change the way to shoot..

Rule of Thirds drive me crazy, I totally changed the way to shoot a picture, before, I thought the object has to be in the center of the picture to make it in focus, but I was wrong, our eyes need more negative space to make something in focus and also ROTH makes a picture more artistic. I'm so exiting and can't wait for more photography technique.

I really enjoyed taking shots for the rule of thirds. It was fun to be able to be more creative rather than worrying so much about a technique. I totally love how placing a subject not in the center makes it stand out so much more. I was always taught to put the focal point at the center but now with what I've learned, I actually want to look at the subject more when its not right smack-dab in the middle.

It was a little bit hard to find the right pictures for the rule of thirds, but I think i have a few.

Favorite photos

While we were all working on getting our rule of thirds shots, I got some photos that I REALLY liked. Now, these are the shots that I thought weren't very good examples of the rule of thirds but they were photos that I got super excited about because I thought they were pretty cool. Tell me what you think of them. Do you think they actually are good examples of the rule of thirds?
Oh! I thought I should mention that the girl is my sister Madeline during band class. She really liked this picture and I hope you all do too!!
